Description:

This two-day workshop will explore the questions:

What is interculturality?
Why is it essential to consider interculturality as we plan for the development of students' proficiency?
How can teachers use the new ACTFL Interculturality Standards to better support students in becoming good learners of culture?

Participants in this workshop will:

1) experience effective pedagogical techniques for using interpersonal communication to engage students with culture

2) explore the implication of the new ACTFL Interculturality Standards for strengthening students' oral proficiency in Spanish

3) experiment with technology as a tool for developing hands-on activities that involve learners in using language to explore culture

This two-day workshop will explore questions such as:

What kinds of language and culture assessments support proficiency development?
Why is performance-based assessment an important component of proficiency-based world language programs?
How does effective feedback build learners' motivation and proficiency?

Teachers who participate in the workshop will:

1) Experience fun, fast, formative assessment strategies that motivate learners to invest in their own success.
2) Enrich their language classes with a diverse array of techniques for assessing culture learning, oral proficiency, and performance.
3) Encourage learners to showcase what they can do in the target language through crowd-sourced assessment.
4) Engage learners in self-assessment, peer assessment, integrated performance assessments, project-based assessment, and portfolio assessment.
5) Explore strategies and technological tools for simplifying grading, developing effective rubrics, and providing effective feedback that improve learners' motivation.

Cost: No cost to teachers; a $20 deposit is required to reserve your place, but it will be returned to you in person at the workshop

The topic will be current events in Spain and will be offered in collaboration with the Spanish Resource Center.
